RESC Provides Ultimate Gift Of Compassion
In the Philippines, more than 20 million people* live below the national poverty line.
Thirty percent* of children suffer in poverty; their basic needs are not met and they are malnourished.
Almost 3 million* school-aged children can’t access an education, let alone finish school.
Nine-year-old Tan-Tan was one of these children – until RE Support and Coaching (RESC) started sponsoring him — all the way from Adelaide, South Australia.
“Our Filipino neighbours face high rates of natural disasters throughout the year as well as extreme poverty and malnutrition,” RESC Founder and Managing Director Raquel Edwards said.
“Poverty is more than just a lack of money; it also involves a lack of access to education and poor health,” she said.
“As a result, children and families are often battling social stigmas along with feelings of isolation, shame and worthlessness.”
In the Philippines, worldwide sponsorship organisation Compassion partners with 450 local churches to support the community.
Compassion’s sponsorship efforts include the provision of home-based care, nutritious meals and medical check-ups.
The organisation also funds church-based activities like camps and sporting events; and delivers educational and skill-building workshops on self-esteem, conflict-resolution, letter writing, career planning, health and hygiene practices, and bible studies.
“Sponsoring Tan-Tan is such a rewarding experience. I love receiving letters and drawings from him and seeing him grow into a healthy and happy child,” Raquel said.
“It’s overwhelmingly rewarding to know – and see – how we are making such an incredible difference in Tan-Tan’s life.”
